24-second answer

Single origin or blend: what's the difference?

A single origin comes from one region, sometimes even one farm.

A blend combines coffees from different regions or countries, and sometimes different roasts, to make a flavor all its own.

Single Origin

Single origin coffee, explained

Single origin coffee comes from one place — one country, usually one region or estate, from one harvest. Worth drinking because it tastes of somewhere in particular.

What origin actually changes

Altitude, soil, varietal and processing all leave a mark. An Ethiopian dried on the cherry tastes nothing like a washed Colombian — without anything being added.

Process, in plain terms

Washed coffees have the fruit stripped before drying — cleaner and brighter. Naturals dry inside the fruit, which pushes them sweeter. Honey sits between.

They rotate, and that's the point

Harvests end. When a coffee sells through it is gone until the next crop, and sometimes it does not come back. A subscription is how you keep one while it lasts.

What does single origin coffee mean?

The coffee comes from one country, one region, and usually one harvest — not combined with anything else. What you taste is that place and that season.

How is single origin coffee different from a blend?

A blend is built for consistency; a single origin is allowed to be itself. That means more character and more variation, including from one year to the next.

Which single origin coffee should I start with?

The lighter roasts show origin most clearly — our Honduran carries blueberry, the Costa Rican orange blossom and peach. If you normally drink dark, start there instead and work lighter.
