Cointreau Barrel Aged – Bright, Sweet & Clean

The twelfth release in our limited Barrel Aged Series, and the first we have ever done with a liqueur. This Costa Rican rested six weeks in a Cointreau barrel, and because Cointreau barrels are never charred, none of the smoke you would expect from a bourbon barrel is here. What comes through instead is orange: a soft orange blossom note the coffee already had, lifted by the barrel. Medium roasted to bring out every layer.

Why You'll Love It

  • Our First Liqueur Barrel: Cointreau is made in Anjou, France, from dried orange peels. Twelve releases in, this is the first time we have gone beyond spirits.
  • No Smoke, All Citrus: An uncharred barrel leaves no smokiness behind. Orange blossom meets candied citrus peel over a clean, bright finish.
  • Extremely Limited: Only 100 bags produced. Once it's gone, it's gone.

Tasting Notes - Cointreau Barrel Aged Coffee

What will you taste?

The Experience.

Six weeks in a Cointreau barrel brings out something we have never had before:

Orange
Blossom
Candied
Citrus Peel
Clean
Finish

Not Just Coffee. An Experience.

Cointreau is made in Anjou, France, from dried orange peels, and its barrels are never charred. That one difference changes everything. Where a bourbon barrel leaves smoke and char behind, this one leaves orange: a soft floral note the Costa Rican already had, lifted and sweetened by six weeks in the wood.

Medium roasted to keep the citrus bright — not bury it.

Whole bean only. Grind fresh for the full experience.

Bright. Sweet. No smoke at all.

The Barrel Story - Cointreau Barrel Aged Coffee

The Barrel

Aged in Cointreau · Single Origin Costa Rican

Twelve releases into our Barrel Aged Series, and this is the first time we have used a liqueur barrel instead of a spirit. Cointreau is made in Anjou, France, from dried orange peels, and unlike bourbon or rum casks, its barrels are never charred. Six weeks in that wood gave this Costa Rican something none of our previous eleven have had.

A First in Twelve

Every previous release used a spirit barrel. This is the first liqueur we have ever aged in.

6 Weeks Aging

Long enough for the beans to take on the orange, short enough to keep the coffee itself intact.

Never Charred

No char means no smoke. If our bourbon barrels ran a little bold for you, this is a different thing entirely.

Orange on Orange

The Costa Rican already carried a soft orange blossom note. The barrel found it and lifted it.

"French orange peel meets Bensenville roast."

FAQ - Cointreau Barrel Aged Coffee
FAQ

Common Questions

How is this different from your bourbon barrel coffees?
This is the difference that matters: Cointreau barrels are never charred. Bourbon and rum casks are burned on the inside, and that char is where the smoke, the vanilla and the heavier sweetness come from. Without it, what the barrel leaves behind is orange — bright, floral and clean. If our bourbon releases ran a little bold for you, start here.
How long is the coffee aged in the barrel?
This batch was aged for 6 weeks in a Cointreau barrel. Long enough for the beans to take on the orange character, short enough that the Costa Rican itself still comes through rather than being buried under it.
Does barrel aged coffee contain alcohol?
No alcohol content. The green coffee beans absorb the flavours and aromas from the barrel — the orange peel, the sweetness, the brightness — but not the alcohol itself. It's all flavour, no buzz (other than caffeine!).
What is Cointreau?
A French orange liqueur, made in Anjou since the 1800s from dried orange peels. It's the orange in a margarita and a sidecar. We had aged in bourbon and rum before, but never in a liqueur — and the peels are exactly why this one tastes the way it does.
Why is this whole bean only?
Barrel aged coffee has delicate, complex flavours that fade quickly once ground, and the citrus notes in this one are lighter than most. Grind fresh right before brewing and you'll get the full orange blossom and candied peel. It makes a real difference.
What's the best way to brew it?
Any method works beautifully. Pour over and French press really let the citrus come forward. As espresso it's bright and unusual. Drip works great too. Brew it however you already brew — just grind fresh.
Will this coffee come back?
Each barrel aged release is truly limited — only 100 bags per batch. Once this Cointreau Barrel Aged Costa Rican is gone, we move to a different barrel for the next release. If you love it, stock up while you can.
