A Coffee Born at Sea
How ocean voyages, monsoon winds, and four centuries of tradition created one of the world's most unique coffees.
A Happy Accident at Sea
When coffee from India's Malabar Coast was shipped to Europe, the journey took months through humid, salty ocean air. Packed tightly in wooden hulls, the beans transformed — swelling, losing acidity, and developing an unexpectedly smooth, mellow character.
Europeans didn't know it yet, but they were drinking the world's first "monsooned" coffee.
Something's Missing
When faster ships arrived via the Suez Canal, coffee reached Europe in weeks instead of months. But something was wrong — the unique flavor Europeans had grown to love was gone.
That's when farmers realized the magic wasn't just in the beans. It was in the journey.
Recreating the Magic on Land
Indian farmers devised an ingenious solution: expose the beans to monsoon winds in open-air warehouses for 12–16 weeks. The humid coastal air mimics those months at sea — swelling the beans and softening acidity naturally.
No chemicals. No shortcuts. Just patience and wind.
400+ Years of Tradition, In Your Cup
This coffee comes from Chikmagalur, Karnataka — India's coffee heartland in the Western Ghats. Grown at 1,067–1,280 meters, then monsooned using the same centuries-old process.
The result? A remarkably smooth, mellow cup with zero bitterness — and natural notes of cardamom, graham, and warm baking spices.
